Author R. D. Blackmore was the son of a local clergyman and grew up and went to school in the area where Lorna Doone is set. Oddly, of all his works, this was not Blackmore’s favorite. In fact, the novel was not at first well received. However, a few years after it was first published, it came out in serial form and received rave reviews. The public was captivated by the wild romantic story, and Lorna Doone went on to become one of the most famous and well known novels of the Victorian era.
