The fear crazed mob is on the verge of anarchy. Pharaoh Akhnaton, self-absorbed in his new religion, is now openly despised by nearly all. Sinuhe remains loyal. In the background, the priests and royal household begin to arrange for his removal and attempt to enlist Sinuhe in their plot. But an eminent threat of invasion by Hittite hordes turns the attention of Egypt away from religious strife.

Sinuhe again becomes the go-between in a hazardous game of diplomacy, and he witnesses the demise of friends who were once all-powerful. But the wiles of Sinuhe cannot prevent the Hittite invasion, and upon his return to Egypt he finds that Horemheb has now become the man of the hour, and all look to this fierce warrior to save the Egyptian soft tab cialis Kingdom from its adversaries, both foreign and domestic.

The concluding volume of The Egyptian is a sprawling, colorful tapestry of monumental proportions. Listen as some of ancient Egypt’s greatest historical figures come to life in this colossal tale of love, war, revenge, greed, and spiritual longing. It is an immense tale that will haunt you for a lifetime.

J.R.R. Tolkien, author of The Lord of the Rings, delivered a famous lecture to the British Academy in 1936 in which he maintained that Beowulf was a poem all of a piece, not (as had been suggested) cialis free trial offer a jumble of fragments for pedantic scholars to paw over. The power & beauty of Beowulf enchanted Tolkien so much that he borrowed freely of its imagery & even of some of its plot when he forged his own epic of Middle Earth.

This medieval masterpiece, written in pre-Norman England Saxon, lay forgotten for centuries, rediscovered & printed for the first time early in the 19th century. It has been translated many times since, and the more people read Beowulf, the more they admire it. For good reason. In strikingly beautiful lines, it affirms the ideal of tenderness joined to strength, and of courage ennobled by virtue. It speaks resounding tones of valor, faith, and honor. It?s a heroic tale of pagan Germanic origin, a saga of a vanishing age retold in the new light of the Christian era. Its author, most likely an educated monk from Northumbria, was certainly influenced by the work of Virgil. The old pagan legends of blood feuds & monsters formed the dark background against which the Christian hero Beowulf would shine forth with deeds of courage & virtue. Of all old Anglo-Saxon poems, Beowulf is the greatest.

This version of Beowulf is organized in 17 parts. Within some sections, there are digressions which do not, strictly speaking, belong to the central plot. These sections, called lays, have been enhanced by an echo to help the listener detect them. An introduction by Henry Bradley precedes the poem.

Told from the first person point of view, it is the story of Sinuhe, physician to the royal court of Pharaoh Amenhotep III and his successors in the middle of the tumultuous 14th century B.C. From his exalted position, Sinuhe was able to observe and participate in some of the most intimate and important decisions that affected the powerful Egyptian kingdom of the 18th Dynasty during a very troubled period of its history. Waltari brilliantly captures the life and rhythms of the ancient world as it was 3,400 years ago.

When Sinuhe is sent as envoy to various foreign courts, including Babylon, Syria, and Crete, he encounters strange people with even stranger customs and beliefs. But Sinuhe is a tortured soul, a man who has been in love many times, and always to his sorrow. He travels to forget. Based on actual historical events, Sinuhe encounters many of the real life characters who are familiar to many: Pharaoh Akhnaton, Queen Nefertiti, Tutankhamon, and the ruthless Horemheb…all real people whose lives, images, and stories are known to us from stone engravings, sculpture, and papyrus chronicles brought to light by modern archaeology.

Follow along on a journey down the ancient Nile to a time of mysterious religions, beautiful palaces, and squalid urban life…to a time of spiritual and political passions that threatened to overwhelm an entire kingdom.

The Egyptian: Volume 1 begins with the story of Sinuhe’s youth and education, his first love affair and the disaster that follows. We follow Sinuhe on his dangerous journey to the north, into the lands of Syria, Babylon, and Crete where he encounters new ways of thinking, new religions, barbaric customs and refined luxuries. And where he again finds love. The volume ends with Sinuhe’s return to an Egypt seething with revolt.

Often, instead of being about anything, Russian stories sometimes seem to be the thing in itself. Be this as it may, it is an undeniable fact that with hardly any portent of future greatness to come, Russian literature suddenly sprang fully developed into existence in the 19th century. One after another, from Pushkin to Chekhov, some of the greatest writers who have ever lived emerged from the steppes, forests, and cities of Mother Russia.

Selections in Volume I:

In The Shot, by Alexander Pushkin, a duel is postponed so that it may be continued at a more propitious time.

The Overcoat, by Nikolai Gogol, is the hilarious tale of a lowly bureaucrat who suddenly finds himself in need of a new overcoat.

The Tryst, by Ivan Turgenev, is a gorgeous, masterfully written first person narrative of a hunter who overhears two young people: one who loves and one

In The Wedding, by Fyodor Dostoyevsky, when a man is invited to a children’s ball, he witnesses an amazing incident. Five years later, a posh wedding clarifies everything.

In A Prisoner in the Caucasus, by Leo Tolstoy, Tartar rebels take a Russian officer prisoner in order to collect a ransom.

Sadly, this fantastic literature is little known in the west outside the halls of academia, though a handful of recent 20th century authors have attained a respectable following. The stories in this volume date from the sixth century A.D. to the early part of the 20th century, and will give the listener a good feel for the subject. Astonishingly, the Chinese enjoyed from the earliest times many of the genres we take for granted today, from romance and love to adventure and satire.

There are seven stories in Volume 1.

In The White Monkey, by Anonymous, a general’s honor and self respect are on the line when his wife is kidnapped.
The Jade Goddess, retold by Lin Yu Tang, is like a fine piece of exquisite porcelain.

Will an artist put aside his creative gifts for the sake of love?
The Canary Murders, by Feng Meng-lung, is a twelfth century forerunner ofthe detective story which attempts to sort out a string of mysterious deaths.
The Book Worm, by P’u Sung-ling is a humorous satire about a bibliophile who suddenly finds love.
In K’ung I-Chi, by Lu Hsun, an old-fashioned scholar loses his way in life.
In Mr. Pan In Distress, by Yeh Shao-Chun, war threatens the settled life of a provincial cheap cialis soft educator.
Intoxicating Spring Nights, by Yu Ta-fu, is a look at the effects of a newly industrialized society.

His name has become synonymous with a certain literary style much admired and widely copied since his death. Typically, a Chekhov story is a mood, a state of mind, usually with regard to relations between one person and another. Under the influence of the constant, infinitesimal, and unforeseen pinpricks

of life, there occurs a gradual transformation of that state of mind. His writing is at once fluid and precise. Most of his stories end on a minor note, instead of the dramatic flourish. Today, Chekhov is regarded as Russia’s greatest writer, and his narrative works continue to attract an ever wider circle of readers worldwide.

This volume includes the following unabridged works with music and sound effects:

The Kiss

The Two Volodyas

The Lady with the Dog

Fear

The Darling

Chameleon

Oysters

Finally, An Essay On The Life of Chekhov, by Dimitri Mirsky, takes us on a tour of Chekhov’s life and career.

His style is marked by vivid description, grim situations, and sardonic twists of fate. In terms of technique, he was far ahead of his time and

diflucan during pregnancy

his short stories are among the very best in American literature.

Ambrose Gwinnett Bierce (1842 ? 1914?) was the tenth child in a family of thirteen born on a simple farm in Meigs County, Ohio. He joined the Union army as a private and distinguished himself in many engagements throughout the War Between the States, including the horrific battle of Shiloh. By war’s end, he had been commissioned a major. But Bierce despised war and grew to see in it nothing but pain and wasted lives. He moved to San Francisco in the 1870s and drifted into a career as a journalist and then as a writer of short stories.

instrucciones del cytotec

To his friends he was known as Bitter Bierce. A well-traveled and troubled man, he constantly relived the horror of war, and was obsessed by the specter of sudden death. Disappearing into Mexico in 1913, he cialis buying was never seen again.

Included in Volume 1 is The Moonlit Road, one of the most unforgettable ghost stories ever written. Other examples in this volume of his power to chill are Beyond the Wall, An Adventure at Brownville, and An Inhabitant of Carcosa. An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge draws on Bierce’s war experiences and the ever-present reality of death. Masterpieces of this genre include One of the Missing, Parker Adderson, and A Baffled Ambuscade.
